The casemate 'Maastricht 2' is accessible after 84 years

For 84 years, a part of our history remained unwritten.

On 10 May 1940, Fort Eben-Emael was attacked. Casemate ‘Maastricht 2’ was destroyed, resulting in 5 dead and 17 seriously injured.

After 84 years, the casemate will open its doors in June 2024, thanks to the hard work of the non-profit association's volunteers and with the support of an external company.

The underground entrance, stairwell and a 30-metre-high staircase were restored so that visitors can now witness the impressive destruction and its tragic consequences for themselves. The soldiers who lost their lives here were among the first Belgian victims of World War II.

After more than a year's work and an investment of over €90,000, made possible in part by the National Lottery, this tragic and unique relic of WW2 is now fully accessible and open for visits.
