Fort Eben-Emael, where history comes to life

Welcome to the largest subterranean fortress in Europe

Fort Eben-Emael was built between 1932 and 1935 as one of the largest subterranean fortifications in Europe.
The spectacular and innovative attack on the fort by an elite unit of German paratroopers on 10 May 1940 marked the tragic start of World War II in Western Europe.

The underground barracks and museum are heated. In the corridor system and bunkers, there is a constant temperature of 11°C. Warm clothing is strongly recommended. We also recommend closed footwear.

The underground barracks and museum area are fully wheelchair accessible. Some guided visits are possible by wheelchair but have steep slopes and may require a helper.
Visiting an artillery casemate, a gun turret or the superstructure of the fort is unfortunately not possible for wheelchair users and is not recommended for visitors with limited mobility.

The fortress is more than a museum, it's an experience

It is an incredible experience and exciting adventure to step into the world of the young soldiers of 1940 and immerse yourself in the secret German plans for the airborne assault on Eben-Emael.

An immense underground complex

Fort Eben-Emael extends over 45 hectares on 2 subterranean levels, 17 above-ground bunkers and associated field fortifications. The fort could accommodate a garrison of 1200 soldiers and has a vast network of 5Km of underground galleries.

The gigantic complex is the largest and best-preserved underground fortress from the Second World War that can still be visited. Almost 90% of the underground complex is open to visitors. A team of skilled guides is on hand to help you explore this immense subterraean structure and to enable you understand its history.
