Kenneth C. Thayer,
a 99-year-old World War II veteran,
visits Fort Eben-Emael
On 15 September, Eben-Emael Fort welcomed a special guest: Mr Kenneth C. Thayer, a 99-year-old US World War II veteran.
A decorated member of the 30th Infantry Division, he fought from the Normandy landings until victory in May 1945, he landed in Normandy and fought through till victory in May 1945. His unit was involved in some of the heaviest fighting on the western front.
Eight decades later, Kenneth, who brings with him almost a century of life experience, will share his impressive stories and reflect on the sacrifices he and his comrades made.
For younger generations, this visit offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the horrors and heroic deeds of the time with this exceptional man, who symbolises the sacrifices and heroism of his generation.
Kenneth C. Thayer has been decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross and a Bronze star.

During his visit, there will be a floral tribute at Major Lambe’s monument at 09:45, during which both Kenneth and representatives from Fort Eben-Emael will pay tribute.
Major Lambe, an officer of the 30th Infantry Division, was killed by mortar shells at the entrance to the fort on 10 September 1944
